Homepage clarity checker
See whether your homepage says what you do, what kind of product it is and who it is for, in the HTML that crawlers and answer engines read.
What it checks
The first words a visitor or a crawler meets. Every result is compared with our study of how 161 funded startups describe themselves.
- The opening copy
- We fetch your homepage the way AI crawlers do, without running JavaScript, and read the title tag, the meta description, the first H1 and the first real paragraph. If your headline only appears after scripts run, we report it missing, because so do they.
- Says what you do
- Whether the opening has a sentence with your company as the subject: "Acme is a..." or "Acme reconciles...". This is the automated check from our study, unchanged, so your result compares directly with the 154 startups in it.
- Product, buyer and slogans
- Whether the opening names the kind of product and who it is for, whether the H1 reads like a slogan, how long the H1 is, and which stock phrases it uses. In the study we made these calls by hand. Here they are word lists and rules, so treat them as a second opinion.
Questions, answered
- Is it free?
- Yes. There is no signup. Each check fetches your homepage once and runs a few rules on the text. No AI model is involved.
- Why does it say my homepage has no H1?
- Because the HTML your server sends has none. Either the headline is styled text in a div, or it is drawn by JavaScript after the page loads. Most AI crawlers and many search tools read the HTML as sent and never run scripts, so they see no headline either.
- How accurate are the slogan and audience checks?
- They are heuristics. The audience check looks for specific buyers ("loan officers", "restaurants", "for B2B SaaS finance teams") and ignores vague ones like "you", "teams" or "businesses". The slogan check calls an H1 a description when it names a kind of product or a buyer. Both can miss unusual wording, so read your opening and decide.
- Where do the comparison numbers come from?
- From our October 2026 study of the homepages of 161 startups that raised a seed, Series A or Series B round, 154 of which loaded. The method, the full table and a free CSV are in the write-up.
- My homepage says what we do. Why did it fail the first check?
- The check looks for one specific sentence shape: your company name as the subject, either "Acme is a..." in the H1 or first paragraph, or a sentence near the start of the first paragraph that opens with the name and a verb. Plenty of clear homepages describe the product without naming the company. Adding that one sentence is the cheapest fix there is.
- Do you store the pages I check?
- We keep each result for ten minutes so repeat checks are instant. We do not keep a list of the sites people check.
