Brand voice

Brand voice is the consistent personality a brand writes and speaks in, the words it uses, the tone it takes, and the things it would never say. It's how a company sounds recognisable across a homepage, an email, and an error message.

Brand voice is the consistent personality a brand writes and speaks in. It’s the vocabulary it reaches for, the tone it takes, plain or playful, blunt or warm, and, just as importantly, the things it would never say. A clear voice is why a company sounds like itself whether you’re reading its homepage, a receipt email, or a 404 page.

Voice isn’t decoration on top of the message; it comes straight out of the positioning. A brand that stands for doing hard things simply shouldn’t write in jargon, and one built on care shouldn’t sound like a legal disclaimer. The fastest way to sound fake is to borrow a voice that doesn’t match what the brand actually is.

We treat voice as part of the writing, not a separate style guide nobody reads. The thinking is in writing that sounds human and how we approach copy.

Quick recall

What is brand voice? The consistent personality a brand writes and speaks in, its words, tone, and boundaries.

Where does it come from? The positioning: voice should match what the brand actually stands for.

Why does consistency matter? It’s what makes a brand recognisable across every touchpoint, from the homepage to an error message.
