Brand positioning
Brand positioning is the single idea a company wants to own in a customer's mind — who it's for, what it does better, and why that matters. It's the decision the rest of the brand is built to express.
Brand positioning is the single idea a company wants to own in a customer’s mind. It names who the brand is for, the one thing it does better than the alternatives, and why that thing matters to the person choosing. Everything downstream — the logo, the voice, the homepage headline — is an attempt to express that one idea clearly.
Good positioning is narrow on purpose. Trying to be for everyone reads as being for no one, so the work is as much about what you drop as what you claim. A sharp position makes the identity easier to design and the copy easier to write, because both have a fixed point to answer to.
We settle it early, in positioning, building on what surfaces in founder sessions. See the whole sequence in how we build a brand.
Quick recall
What is brand positioning? The one idea a brand wants to own: who it’s for, what it does better, and why that matters.
Why keep it narrow? Being for everyone reads as being for no one; a sharp position is easier to design and write for.
When is it decided? Early — before the identity, so the identity has something to express.
