Wix eCommerce vs a custom store you own

Wix suits a small catalogue sold alongside a brochure site, and its drag and drop editor is easy for anyone. A custom store you own costs more to build but has no monthly plan, handles larger catalogues and complex offers, and loads faster. Choose Wix to start small, own the store when selling is the business.

When Wix is enough

A café selling gift cards, a studio selling a few prints, a consultant selling a workbook: when the store is a small part of a simple site, Wix is quick and affordable. Anyone on the team can edit it.

Where Wix stores hit limits

Wix sites cannot be exported, so leaving means rebuilding. Larger catalogues with many variants get slow to manage, and offers beyond simple coupons need apps. Page weight from the editor makes Core Web Vitals harder to pass on mobile, which affects both search rankings and conversion.

What you get by owning it

A store built for your products and offers, a proper admin panel for orders, stock and promotions, and pages that load fast on a phone. You pay once, then only for hosting and your payment gateway.

Straight answers.

Is Wix good for ecommerce?

For a small catalogue and simple selling, yes. For a brand where the store is the business, with hundreds of products, variants, offers, and fast mobile pages, a dedicated platform or an owned store does more and often costs less over time.

Can I export my Wix store?

Products and orders can be exported as CSV, but the site design and code cannot. Moving off Wix means rebuilding the storefront, then importing the product data and setting redirects from the old URLs.

How much does Wix eCommerce cost?

At the time of writing, Wix plans that take payments start at about $29 a month on yearly billing (Core), with Business at about $39 and Business Elite at about $159. Payment processing and apps are extra. Prices vary by country, so check your local Wix pricing page.
