Brand naming
Brand naming is the work of choosing a company or product name that's distinctive, ownable, and legally clear. A good name is memorable and available as a domain and trademark — which is harder than it sounds.
Brand naming is the work of finding a name a company or product can own — distinctive enough to remember, flexible enough to grow into, and clear of legal and domain conflicts. It sounds like the fun part; it’s usually the hardest, because the obvious good names are taken and a name has to survive trademark checks and the availability of a usable domain.
The trap is falling for a name that describes exactly what you do today. Descriptive names feel safe but age badly and are near-impossible to protect — the more literal a name, the less ownable it is. Strong names tend to have a little distance from the literal, which is what gives them room to mean something as the company grows. Naming also can’t be judged in isolation: a name lives or dies in how it looks set as a wordmark and sounds said aloud.
That’s why we treat it as part of identity, not a separate exercise. See the full arc in how we build a brand.
