How we build a brand, start to finish

A brand with us takes six weeks and runs five phases: founder sessions, positioning, identity, refinement, then delivery. Strategy comes first and design follows from it. We don’t start with a logo, because a logo drawn before the strategy is decoration with no argument under it.

A lot of brand work starts at the end. Someone wants a logo, gets a logo, and it looks fine while meaning nothing, because nobody decided what the brand is for or who it’s for first. Running the phases in order means that by the time we draw anything, every visual choice has a reason we can say out loud.

Here’s the sequence.

The five phases

Founder sessions — Week 1. Two or three sessions to understand your market, your customers, and where you sit among them. Everything else is built on this. Read the Founder sessions note →

Positioning — Week 2. We write your brand story, messaging, and tone of voice. This becomes the brief the design answers to. Read the Positioning note →

Identity — Weeks 3 to 4. Logo, wordmark, colour, typography. One resolved direction, presented with the reasoning behind it. Read the Identity note →

Refinement — Week 5. You review, we refine, and we keep going until it’s right. Read the Refinement note →

Delivery — Week 6. Brand guidelines, full asset kit, social templates, deck assets, packaged for your team to run with. Read the Delivery note →

Why strategy comes first

Positioning is the biggest decision in the project, and it isn’t a tagline. It answers two plain questions: what does this do, and who is it for? Get those right and the design almost briefs itself. Get them wrong and no amount of craft rescues it.

So the first two weeks produce no visuals. They produce decisions. Identity then moves quickly, because it’s answering a brief instead of hunting for one. The full argument is in the positioning note.

How brand and website fit together

If we’re doing both, the brand comes first and the website process picks up where delivery ends. Your positioning, messaging, and tone become the discovery brief for the site, so the two match visually and say the same thing.

Quick recall

How long is a brand project? Six weeks: founder sessions, positioning, identity, refinement, delivery.

Why not start with a logo? Before the strategy, a logo is decoration with no argument under it.

What’s the biggest decision? Positioning: what it does and who it’s for.

How does it connect to a site? Positioning and tone become the brief for the website.
