Founder sessions: where the brand actually starts

A brand project starts with you talking. Week one is two or three working sessions with the founders, digging into your market, your customers, and where you sit among the alternatives. Nothing gets designed yet. We’re gathering the raw material every later decision is built from, and how good that material is sets the ceiling on the whole project.

Most of what a brand needs already lives in the founders’ heads, just not written down: why you started, who you’re really for, what you refuse to do, where you think competitors get it wrong. Those instincts are usually right and usually vague. These sessions pull them out and make them specific enough to design against.

What we dig for

The real customer. A mindset, not a demographic. Who believes what, rejects what, wants to feel what. Any studio can target “founders aged 25 to 45.” Targeting the founder who’s embarrassed by how their current site looks gives you something to design toward.

Where you sit. What customers would pick instead of you, and what those options get wrong. A brand is shaped as much by what it stands against as by what it stands for.

What only you know. Your founder’s-eye view: the industry wisdom you think is broken, the thing you do differently and haven’t told anyone. The brand’s whole angle is often hiding here.

What you won’t be. The clients you’d turn down, the tone you’d never use, the shortcuts you won’t take. Knowing the edges makes a brand specific fast.

Why founders, in person

These are with the people who decide, not a marketing team relaying answers secondhand. Build a brand from a survey and you get something safe and blurry, true of everyone and no one. The sharp material comes from a real conversation, where we can push on an answer and ask why.

Two or three sessions is the right amount. Enough to get past the rehearsed pitch and into what you actually think, short enough to keep momentum.

What happens next

All of it feeds straight into week two, where we turn it into a written position: story, messaging, tone of voice. That’s positioning, and it’s only as strong as what this week produces. The brand process overview shows where it fits.

Quick recall

What are founder sessions? Two or three week-one talks about your market, customer, and position. No design.

Who’s in the room? The founders. The people who decide.

What are we after? The customer as a mindset, what you stand against, and what only you know.

Where does it go? Straight into positioning in week two.
