Refinement: we go back and forth until it's right

You’ve seen the identity. Refinement, in week five, is where you live with it, react to it, and tell us where it isn’t landing, and where we take that and make it sharper. We keep going until the work is genuinely right, not just right enough to sign off.

The first direction is us proposing. This week is us and you resolving. Good feedback here makes the identity sharper. Handled badly, feedback is also how strong brands get quietly watered down into something safe, so how we run the week matters as much as the design.

How we handle feedback

We ask what’s wrong, not what to change. “This feels too cold” is useful, because it’s a symptom we can trace to a cause. “Make the blue lighter” is a fix that might treat the wrong problem. Give us the reaction and let the fix be our job.

We push back when we should. If a change would weaken the brand, we say so and explain why rather than quietly doing it. You’re paying for judgement as much as hands, and sometimes the right answer to a request is a reasoned no.

We separate taste from strategy. Some feedback is preference and some is the brand genuinely missing, and we say which is which. A founder disliking a colour they’ll grow to love is a different thing from a colour that fights the positioning.

Why it’s a real phase

Plenty of studios treat revisions as an annoyance bolted onto the end, capped at two rounds. We build a week in for it, because the back-and-forth is how a good identity becomes yours. Skip it to save time and you get a brand that’s technically finished and never quite loved.

It still converges. Each round should land closer, and when it stops improving in any real way, it’s done. If feedback starts circling the same points, that’s usually a sign an earlier decision, often in positioning, needs another look, not another visual tweak.

What’s next

Once the identity is right, we package it. Delivery turns it into guidelines, assets, and templates your team can use without us. The brand process overview ties it together.

Quick recall

What is refinement? Week five: you review, we refine, and we repeat until the identity is genuinely right.

How should you give feedback? Tell us what’s wrong, not what to change. The fix is ours.

Will we push back? Yes, when a change would weaken the brand.

When is it done? When each round stops improving the work.
